Why aren't people educated in school about sex, birth control and pregnancy etc? It astonishes me how few people know about this stuff particularly on YA. A moment ago a woman asked could she be pregnant even though her boyfriend 'pulls out'. I thought everyone had the common sense to know that doesn't work.

Are religious groups in America stopping schools from educating their students? Or are the schools not doing their job?

rossonero: Abstinence may be safe but its hardly practical. We're dealing with reality and if that tack were going to work it would have worked hundreds of years ago. The urge to procreate isn't going to disappear just because you want it to! Education is the only way to ensure these negative consequences are avoided.

To a degree, yes, religious institutions have preferred keeping kids in the dark about sex education for fear that the "more kids know, the more likely they will be to start engaging in sex at an early age and in a casual manner." Unfortunately, this sort of logic only produces more ignorant teens who make poor choices when it comes to sexual activity....hence, teen pregnancy is still a problem as are STD's. I'm all for people taking sex seriously and not being flippant about sexuality...yet I also firmly believe reasonable, thoughtful measures have to be implemented in our childrens' education in relation to sex. Too many nuts on the far right have this outrageously narrow view about sex and refuse to comprehend the consequences of keeping sex education out of the educational agenda. You can be a faithful, moral person AND want your children to have the tools they need to make the best decisions for their health and their futures. Period.

Religious groups are begging american schools to tell children not to have sex. They're not ready for the results/consequences. I can assure you, this is infinitely safer than "safe sex."

UPDATE: It works now in various parts of the world, despite the urge to procreate existing there too. It's been particularly successful in helping stem the tide of AIDS in Uganda. Regrettably, most people in the west have been conditioned to think that it's impossible to wait until marriage before having sex.

I believe it's one of two things. DEEP DOWN, I think EVERYONE knows that they need to use some form of protection, but A) they're invincible and think "Nah, I'll never get pregnant." or "Are you kidding me--this girl is hot. She doesn't have AIDS!" OR B) they don't care. They're caught up in the heat of the moment and using a form of contraception is the last thing on their mind.

The tiny minority of wing-nuts who want young people ignorant about sex have succeeded in preventing complete, accurate sex education.

(They are, therefore, responsible for most of the abortions they CLAIM to oppose.)

All the evidence (mostly from civilized societies that teach sex education) suggests young people are more likely to postpone having sex until they are older, than students who are kept in ignorance about sex.

And, as you'd guess, they have much lower rates of teen pregnancy, unwanted pregnancy, and abortion than we have.

Going back to your original question, the "abstinence only" programs are taught in most schools.

well every one knows about safe sex but for a guy it is very different . this is the reason why . you see most guys try it for he very first time with a condom and like it until they are caught in a moment when there girl wants to have sex and he tells her baby i don't have a condom and she just tells him do not worry about it at all just for him to pull out . and from that point on the guy's will no longer where condom's to have sex . due to the fact it feels way better with out the condom .
