I adore Stephen King! The Stand is probably my favorite book of all time!
And while "IT" is my second scariest novel ever, my number one is Dean Kuntz's Intensity. I actually never finished the book because it scared me so.

"The turn of the screw" by Henry James.
None of the contemporary stuff has thrilled me as much as this short nouvelle.
By the way I am reading Ghost Story myself now (but in a Spanish translation). I am enjoying a lot. I really like Peter Straub

I have the book "It" by Stephen King, but I havent gotten around to reading it yet. I wasn't aware it was that good! Right now I'm reading a great horror book (also by Mr. King) called "Rose Madder." Another Great book by Stephen King and Peter Straub was "The Black House."

The scariest 'horror book' I ever read was one titled 'Ammie Come Home' but I can't remember the author's name. I love Stephen King's books (esp. Dead Zone) and also Peter Straub's 'Ghost Story' ... but I wouldn't call any of them the 'best' because I don't like horror books generally ... but if it was science fiction or mystery .... there are HUNDREDS of 'bests' in those two groups.

Stephen King's TommyKnockers was the last horror novel I read. It was so scary, I had to stay up all night ('cuz I was too scared to move from my spot or turn off the lights!) It was so scary, I never read another horror novel! That's what makes it the best one I ever read!

Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris....... it was by far the scariest I have ever read. I read the book probably 15 years ago before the movie ever came out... to this day I still look out my back window when driving home after work. The book was much more intense than the movie.
