DO NOT stop payment on a check,, it can cause a nightmare for you, and cost you fees.

Escrow should not cheat you out of money if you are within your contingency period.

Call the escrow company today and tell them that you are not proceeding. Tell them TODAY, so they don't waste any more time on your file. Be fair!

Within what contingencies? I have never seen a contingency that says you can just cancel in a certain time period. They normally say you must not qualify for financing, or something major comes up on the inspection. If this has not occurred, then you cannot just back out. I would suggest you call your agent right now and talk with them. They are not legally allowed just to return your check without the consent of the seller. You need to act fast, but its sounds as if you could be in a bind. I am not sure the contingencies were explained properly to you. Its not just a window of time to change your mind, there are other factors.

Contact your real estate agent. If you have contigencies that allow you to break the contract, your escrow check should be returned to you.
