Greece is a nation today, but if you are talking ancient Greece, the various city-states did not like each other. The two biggest, Sparta and Athens actually went to war with each other, this became known as the Peloponnesian Wars as the Athens and Sparta got the ohter city-states involved too.

Actually, Greece became united under Alexander the Great and his father before him. So... I suppose you could say they were a nation then. But, as to why they didn't willingly become a nation, it's the same reason that the U.S. and, say, Canada don't become a single nation. The cultures are too different. Even though there is no animosity between our two nations, we still would never think about joining with Canada. In the same way, the city-states of Greece were too autonomous from one another to ever join together except in times of war and distress.

Greece has been a nation for thousands of years. However the last time that Greece gained it's independence was March 25, 1821 from the Ottoman Empire.

Depends on what you mean by nation. They were a united group of city states that fought amongst each other too much to ever become unified enough to be under the rule of one city state. They did work together when the situation called for it, so I would say they were pretty close to being a nation.
