How about the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks area? They're not scorching hot like much of the rest of the country and you can see wildlife, geysers and some of the most beautiful scenery. You can hike, bike, canoe, camp or stay in a nice hotel/bed and breakfast. One of my favorite spots is Jenny Lake in Teton Park. You can ferry across the lake, then hike up Cascade Canyon; absolutely gorgeous.

Nearby Bozeman has their Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts, August 3rd-5th.

Nearby Rexburg has their International Dance and Music Festival, July 28th-Aug. 4th.

Hope that helps

Arizona and Utah would be nice and they have some great national parks.

However, I have to agree with Roger on this. Northwest Wyoming is place you should really go. Start in Jackson Hole and explore the Grand Tetons. Its an awesome place that is a classic scene out of the old west. Then head up to Yellowstone National Park. The scenery will take your breath away, the geysers will impress you, and the wildlife is some of the best on the planet. There is something for everyone here. There are grand hotels to relax in, a lake for fishing trips, and plenty of trails for hiking and horseback riding. You can see grizzly and black bears, wolves, coyotes, elk, moose, antelope, and bison just to name a few creatures. Visit www.yellowstone.net to help plan your trip. Also make sure you visit the discussion forum there to see pictures, reports, and get advice from regular park visitors. It is a magical place you will never forget and immediately want to go back to. There is something about Yellowstone that gets inside of you.

You will never forget sitting in a green mountain valley, watching a herd of bison cross a river, with wolves howling in the background.

If you would like to see a wide variety of scenery, towns, cities, and people, head to New England. If you travel Maine< New Hampshire, and Vermont you will see parts of this country most people do not know exist. You can experience, the Atlantic ocean, mountains, potatoe fields, dairy farms, beautiful cities, quiet rural New England towns, and great people. Head up I-95 to Bangor, Maine, go east to Acadia Nat. Park. Then head to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. West into Vermont to Peacham, (one of the top 5 rural towns in the U.S.) then on up to the Northern Kingdom of Vermont. An incredible trip through some forgotten parts of this country.

It's a big country with lots to do. Narrow down what you want to do, and then check the travel sites like frommers.com for ideas. Most big cities have a festival every week during the summer, and the small towns put out the welcome mat at peak tourism season (July/August) too.

Try Missouri. it's got St Louis and Kansas city, plus lots of rivers and lakes for water sports, Branson if you feel like being a tacky tourist, beautiful mountains, small towns, and really friendly people.
