I was just reading a YA question about Fred Thompson and there were a number of responders that said he was "too ugly to vote for".

Are we as a society ready to make that great leap (or not so great depending on how you look at it) into the American Idol philosophy of electioins?

I have to assume these were teenagers or angry liberals who are afraid of the truth. I personally vote for the canidate who most closely matches my own political views.

What are your thoughts?

Oh and FRED IN 2008!!!

I"m not any of the above, but surely you have heard equally pointless arguments about Hillary from people who apparently think the real world is all about beauty and who has the biggest bustlline.
Agreeing or disagreeing with a candidate is being reduced to a poor copy of Americas next top model, with little or any attention paid to what the candidate actually say. Even people who think they are judging on positions only read the digests of position papers and cull only the points from those that prove or disproves a specific stance that they agree with.
Its very difficult to take the time to reach a considered position, and we don't do difficult well.
BTW, I wasn't aware Fred had decided to run, you might have trouble voting for him if he doesn't, and you might want to check out his background both in the term he was Senator and the clients he lobbied for when he was a lobbyist.

Whether we like it or not, Americans do make judgments based on looks and have for a long time. In a 1960 televised election debate, the majority of people who watch the debate on TV said the Kennedy won the debate. The majority of people who listened to the debate on the radio said Nixon won. This difference was caused by the difference in appearance between the two men.

Well, if Fred Thompson doesn't get elected because he's "ugly", at least we're safe from ever seeing Hillary as President!

Fred is a bit to much of a law and order man for me .
Freedom is more important then any law and since our government has imposed to many laws and he is a uphold the law kind of person I feel the nation would suffer .
Now if several dozen laws changed then its possible I might support him . .
A sheriff is only as good as the laws he is sworn to uphold .

Unfortunately, they have to be taken seriously, assuming they are old enough to vote.

If you recall the Clinton election, there were many women interviewed on the streets who only talked about "how good looking he was."

But I think there are still enough Americans studying politics to make a decision about politics based on real criteria.

Right now, Fred is my choice.

people like that learn their beliefs from others and the media (MTV). these unfortunately happen to be the same people who either
a) are not even registered to vote, so I wouldn't worry too much

or

b) vote for a candidate based on frivolous reasons. And then later complain about that elected individual when they don't do what they assume politicians are suppose to do.

My thoughts are Fred Thompson is incompetent, inexperienced and too conservative for the average American.

Fred Thompson is just another Hollywood actor and a master lobbyist. As far as looks go, I agree with you. Looks are not important. So why all the conservative remarks about Hilary and the size of her legs?

Like the cons say Clinton has fat ankles and they can't vote for her?
Same thing, different party.
Why do you even listen to crap like this?
Oh yeah, there was a post earlier that Clinton changes her accent depending on where she is. Now if that isn't a non issue I don't know what is.

I totally agree with you. My vote is given to the candidate with the best vision for America in my opinion - the one with a realistic plan and the experience to carry it out. Someone who I think will lead our country in the right direction.

My vote has nothing to do with someone's personal appearance, race, religion, marital status, gender, sexual orientation or any other superficial detail.
