Forwards K means the batter struck out on a swing (even if they tipped it and the catcher caught it)
Backwards means the batter did not swing and the umpire called strike 3

K is a swinging strikeout - backwards K is a called third strike ... and as far as the PROPER way to record things in a scorecard, the most important thing is that YOU can read the scorecard afterwards and be able to tell what happened in the game

A normal k is a strikeout when the batter swingsor foul tips it into the catcher's glove. A backwards k means the batter watched the 3rd strike...then he got rung up by the ump.

A backwards "K" is not the proper way to record it in your scorecard. The proper way is Kc; which means the batter was Called out on strikes whereas a regular "K" is that he swung and missed.

While Georgie Porgie is technically correct, the vast majority of scorekeepers (major, minor, college) are now using the backwards K as struck out "looking".
