which orientation is safer for the 360? for the discs? for the ventilation concerns?

Keep it laying down (horizontal). If you stand it up right and bump it slightly while a game is inside of it, it will fall in your 360 and scratch it up. So keep it laying down. If short of space, but in a tight area, you can stand it. Make sure you won't bump it or move it though.

The position the xbox is in does not really matter as the cooling fan is located on the back. The main thing to check is that the back is well away from anything that could block ventilation.

flat....if it is upright make sure there is no possible chance that it can fall over...if so your disc is screwed

for ventilation? i don't see a real difference

lay it flat. Becuase knowing the xbox 360, it will scratch your disks if you stand it up. only stand it up if your really short of space.
