Crime of passion is a defence statute, meaning that because of passion of the moment, the suspect was not in full control of his reason. You see your spouse in the arms, legs, etc. of another person and you get so instantly angry that you lash out against them both and cause serious bodily harm or death, etc. You defend yourself saying that you were acting in the passion of the moment and did not think about the consequences of your actions. So you get a manslaughter charge instead of murder. It lessens the offence if you can prove that your crime was a crime of passion.

I've heard of the sudden passion defense that gives men a license to murder their wives. In one case I heard about recently, a man was let off by the jury for killing his wife for adultery when he was committing adultery too. I don't understand why more women don't protest these sexist middle east like laws. Men don't own their wives for crying out loud.
