Hons is a short form for Honours. When you do a hons.course its duration is for 3 years as opposed to 2 years for a pass course. So in an honours course you would be studying for a longer duration as well as in greater detail and intensity. So an hons. course has more value than a pass course. This is for Indian universities and my experience is from Calcutta University.I hope this info is of help to you.

Usually 60% is First class.
50% is second class
40% v is third class
more than 70% to 75 % is distinction,

It indicates an honors class that covers more ground and very quickly. It would be a good idea to take honors classes if you want to go to a high powered university. If you don't like work, stay away.
