I think the issue of immigration is not liberal or conservative. American citizens, Democrat and Republican, were overwhelmingly against the last immigration bill. It wasn't because of the Amnesty. It was because the border problem was never fixed. You should not try dealing with the issue illegals already here until you fix the reason that they have been able to come here so easily.

The Liberal ideology is a theory which holds forth beliefs that have no basis in reality.
They are Advocates of a policy that empowers a strong government to enslave its people with a high tax burden incident to the support of extravagant and unnecessary social programs destructive to both the work ethic among the lower class, and the incentive to innovate and succeed among the working class.
The problems we face today are because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.
A democracy will continue to exist up until
the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous
gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority
always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from
the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally
collapse over loose fiscal policy

Sure you can still be liberal. Liberal and Con is not black and white. In fact I would wager most people are middle of the road really and very few fall into the extremes.
I think most of the liberals in this country were against it as well. Ted Kennedy does not represent all liberals in this country. There is nothing wrong with being human. Humans should be above Darwinism.

There are different ways to address every issue. Not every liberal is in lock step with a certain set of beliefs.
Here's the issue on the border: As long as we let those who employ illegals to do so with impunity, they will. Those who pay substandard wages to illegal workers should thus be hammered. I would propose anyone caught employing an illegal worker loses their license to practice business for one year.
No demand, no supply, right?

I have Liberal friends who are NOT for open borders illegal immigration. I think that's why this thing failed. Most of us want people to follow our laws and immigrate here legally.
Don't worry, you can keep your Liberal status.

so all it takes is over-hype of an issue that has been with us for decades...and you take the occasion to question your core beliefs?...well now...consider this...with the overreaction (something we Americans, as a group, do all too often) and the defeat of the immigration bill. it is certain nothing will be done on the federal level, on this issue, until 2009 at the earliest. action being taken at the state level is running into problems (think Arizona) that require federal involvement that won't happen. so tell me who really benefits by the defeat of the bill...?

You do not have to agree with everything your party does. I am a pro-life democrat and also was against the illegal immigration deal. also, there were several democrats that voted against the immigration deal.

no one is 100% liberal or conservative. and you shouldn't get caught up in if you are one or the other anyway.. just do what you think is right (what YOU.. not anyone else) and let other people worry about the labels.
