I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. AND MORE! I cannot undestand all these kids who live the life of anime. How dumb! Our world is going to be managed by people who know nothing at all about the real world, but know everything about anime. What a waste!
Back to the art question, you are completely right! It is not art at all!

I know that some people agree with you. I do not, but i respect your point of view.
You are thinking they are only stupid cartoons. They are not, there is more behind. I agree there is no realism. But there is non-realism art around, why not anime cartoons.
Anime is an expression of art and a big industry of films and ads. Only in Japan, Anime moves more money than Disney in all the world. That mean some people consider anime character beauty, it is a fact.
There is different themes of animes more than the ones of film movies. That means there are porno animes (hentai), animes of horror, animes for young people, animes for little kids, animes for males or womans, even for gay people. So i guess you do not know that.
Then anime drawing is easier that other types because shadows are plain color. The proportions of the human body are simplified and made that way for cheap, mass production and a style of drawing that many consider beauty. Then not all anime drawing characters have big eyes.
Anime animation is interesting for a lot of people, and most animes have an interesting history. There is rare an anime without an elaborated history behind to support the animation.
Some histories are even enough to interest people without considering the animation.

First off, be careful what you call "real art" because art is a subjective thing. The minute you start dissing someone's style, you run the risk of someone doing that to you.
Bare in mind that not everyone's tastes are the same as yours. And just because you like something, doesn't make you the be all expert on it. Art is art, you either like it or you don't. If you like realism, great, go for it. Do realistic art. Realistic art is great. But, stylized art has it's place as well, and can be just as creative. Would you put down Picasso because he didn't paint something that looke like a photograph? Or Pollack?
Anime is a style. It may not be for you, but that doesn't make the people who do like it idiots. It just means they like something you don't appreciate. We are all different, with varied opinions. Anime touchs someone in a way you haven't experienced. That's not a bad thing, it just is. Having an opinion is what makes us human. Excepting others' opinions is what makes us great.

I agree with avoiding generalization. But I also don't understand the fascination with manga. To me they look all alike. I wish there were a couple of real distinctive versions out there, then maybe I'd get it. But I've also met a number of art/design students whose main aim in life seemed to make carbon copies of the existing stuff which is not an artistic aim I understand. I used to watch the Mike&Spike festival of animation now quite a while back and there were always some good ones, so there are still people who can be inventive about this.

I myself like the "real art" that you talk about, but everyone has their own forms of expression. Just because you don't like anime doesn't mean that it's below your realism. I figured an art student would realize the different forms of expression through pencils and whatnot. Like I said, I like the old paintings, and I appreciate if someone can put their surroundings on paper, but no matter how much you don't like it, anime takes some talent. Everyones' tastes are different.

To diss anime' is like saying "all comedy movies are bad" or "all drama movies are bad" - it's too broad an insult for a major, varied form of cartoons.
The overly big eyes were originally a retort against "slanty eyed" racism, or a way to distinguish non-Asian characters.
I also think some of the translations / dubbing can ruin what might have been a good movie in its native country. Stick with subtitles, if at all possible.
I'm not a freak - in fact, I've come very late to the Anime' party, but I do love COWBOY BEBOP, GHOST IN THE SHELL, and a couple other series/movies. Like anything, though, sometimes sequels can get old or repetitive, so choose your franchise wisely!

Art is in the eye of the artist. Everyone views art differently. I don't particularly like anime either, but who am I to judge? There may be others who don't appreciate realism as well.

I guess everyone has a different aesthetical value judgement, but isn't that supposed to be respected?
I personally never got Picasso's art or 3-D art, but just because I don't like it,doesn't mean it isn't art. Even if everybody in the whole world didn't like a piece of art, it would still follow the basic instructions of being created by someone with emotion and/or effort.
I however, love Edvard Munch, and am ok with Anime, but love graphic Novels like "Tank Girl" or Marvel and Dark Horse comics...

Anime can be real art. Though most of it falls way short of the mark. Just like most other art forms - there are a few really talented people, and a bunch of talentless hacks.
Most geeks get into it for the innocent, under-age (some even prepubescent looking) girls that are hypersexualized.

I think everyone appreciates real art, they've just lost the romance in their soul and don't know what's right.
