You're not really going to like this answer, but here it is.

Like all of the other answers it is possible. Problem is that it is fairly unlikely. First the probability that a "hacker" just happened to pick your card out of the hundreds he acquired from the site is very slim. Second, the probability that a "hacker" "hacked" the website is even slimmer. And the probability that the hacker used it on dating sites is close to none.

It sounds to me that your boyfriend signed up for the sites, you found out and he came up with some crap answer. He probably use you're lack of knowledge in the field of computer security against you. Talk to him about it.

Hacker, the real kind (not the media publicized crackers that everyone fears), really don't care about you as an individual. They try to gain access to a large number of credit card information, not just individual cards. Most of the time they don't use them.

I hate to tell you, but while it is possible, it's not plausible. Why not talk to him, even if he still insists that it was "the hackers", it's not really not that big of a deal.

Email me if you have any more questions. Really don't be afraid to ask.

Good Luck!

It's possible! Almost has possible has the sun coming up. To protect yourself, know how they do it so you can counter.

1) They make a website like "www.mach.com" a typo clearly; they make it look like match.com username and passwords. They give a message stating that the user and password were incorrect when they really weren't, they use the information you gave them unsuspectingly and take your ID; AKA "Phishing"

2) They keylog your computer from you opening one of there emails that saids "Win $$$ Now!" and get alot of your passwords.

3) They get in through the internet, and get your computer through Remote connection based on your OS. If it's turned off, it's a harder venture.

Hello Kati :
Believe it !
Your boyfriend needs to go back to the company office that gave him the credit-card. Get the incident reported.
Get the card disabled and rendered 'unusable'.
Police won't help much in this situation. They'll say it's your own fault !
It's a sorry lesson to learn. NEVER give out credit-card OR banking-account information ON-LINE ! !

Absolutely. Hackers can get one's credit card information easily now a days. There are various methods (e.g. Hijacks, Phishing, etc.) Tell your boyfriend to contact his credit card company immediately and cancel it.

Well Yeah, of course if you don't have security protection for your computer. Hackers use spyware to copy data from your computer, and also when you send credit card information through unencrypted sites. But most of us have Spyware protection so we need to be careful when we visit sites that are unencrypted.

Yes, of course, it's very common. Anything you type/put online is vulnerable. Never put any important information online. If you order something, call on the telephone do not input credit card numbers, never do online banking.

Yes it is possible. He could have been a victim of a phishing scam by providing financial info on a fake website, or he has malicious software installed that captures keystrokes.

Is it possible...yes.

Is it highly unlikely...yes.

Most hackers will not purchase memberships to singles sites. They will purchase items they can sell.

My guess is your boyfriend signed up for these sites himself. Not only did he sight up for them, but he is lying to you about it. It is time for yo to get a new boyfriend.

Yes, if you use it at sites that aren't secure.

Make sure the web address starts with https://

The "s" after http means it's a secure site and there should be a lock icon at the bottom of your browser.
