Theory of garden arrangement?

I'm interested in arranging our garden and would like to know where to find a simple book or online guide to design perennial flower beds, shrubs etc in an aesthetically pleasing manner. I have a good artistic eye for design but am new to the gardening gig and would obviously also need a few tips on which perennial flowers go best together,

It's not essential, but if the suggestions pertain to northern gardens (I live in Canada) all the better ...
