Sometimes our generations THINK we are smart...but its just an ego thing. For example, I had a roommate who was younger than me. She had a job, but did not manage her money right, trying to get in the latest fashions and smoking weed all the time. THEN SHE WAS FIRED!! That force me to kick her out of my apartment. She had really bad credit from her mother putting thing in HER name!!! We, as a generation, need to STOP and think of long term results of our actions...not short ones...which is why many can not support themselves in the REAL world.

one has nothing to do with the other. Average, even well below average people have jobs and support themselves. A better question would have been, "why are so many gifted young people who have had all the benefits of educations, etc., not supporting themselves?"
The issue is ambition, not intelligence.

I'm not sure why there is malice in these answers. Some seem VERY defensive.

With the majority of young people moving back HOME after college you do have a right to ask this question. The reason they move back home: "they don't get a job offer that pays them enough money". They have unreasonable expectations of salary- they think they get the top salary just out of college. VERY unrealistic. I think we worried too much about making sure our children had self esteem. They have it--- some border on egomania.

And tracer has a point- work ethic is sorely lacking.

Legally, we're not allowed to support ourselves. We might be scarily smart and experienced but most states don't allow you to get a job until you're 16, meaning we have school and work for 2 years until we graduate High School and move on to college. We can't support ourselves because between school and work, we spend more money than we can make in the time we're given.

As a youngster, we're also less mature and need some form of guidance to keep us motivated, to help us try and fly from the nest. Its' not how smart you are, but rather how mature you are.

you can be educated, but just because you are educated does not mean you are smart.

A person can not support themselves just with education, but they need a drive, a passion, and obviously common sense.

Example: Jim is a doctor, but he recently went bankrupt from spending too much of his money on unnecessary items, and couldn't pay the bills.

I'm a young educated person, and I do support myself. Probably just as well, if not better, than you do. Whats the point of this question?

Define 'young'.

I've supported myself entirely since I was 18 years old. Paid my own rent, car payment, car insurance, utilities, etc., and put myself through college.

Independence is very important to me. At 18 years old, I figured that I'm an adult and should take responsibility. Why should I have expected my parents to pay for everything, I wasn't living at home anymore. If I'm out on my own, I'm *on my own*.

Can't support themselves?, hell I am young and I support myself. You must be some old fart that likes to talk down on the younger generations. Stop hating, maybe I didn't walk 15 miles to school in the blistering cold like you did. That is all these old farts like to do is hate on the younger generations because they claim life was so damn hard for them.

Education can be expensive. Also for some people, knowledge itself is more important than the money that it could generate.
