They had scented soaps, and prefumes, colognes, and talc powder to absorb moisture and help them to smell nice. Also, there are salts that some people use to help with perspiration and sweating. But hell, if they stunk, they all did, so it wasn't that noticable. Thank G-d for deodorant!

The original formulation for Mum deodorant was invented 1888 by an unknown inventor from Philadelphia. Normally it was recognized as being the first product ever to prevent odor. The inventor quickly trademarked his invention and marketed it through his nurse under the name of ''Mum.'' In the late 1940's Helen Barnett Diserens joined the Mum invention team. A suggestion by a partner inspired Helen to develop an underarm deodorant based on the same principle as a new invention called the 'ball point' pen. This new type of deodorant applicator was tested in the U.S. in 1952 and was marketed under the name of Ban Roll-On. The first anti-perspirant aerosol deodorant was launched in 1965.

People during the 1940s and early 1950s [all previous, included] had to manifest a lot higher magnitude of body odor to violate the norm than they did later.
I don't recall ever being aware deodorant existed prior to, maybe, 1957, when televisions came to my community. A bath once a week was considered minimum. Shirts changed twice a week.

Soaps have been with us for over 200 years, started as an second brand from the candle industry, so the idea of keeping "clean" and "deodorized" is not a new concept.
Linen waters, talcum powder and baking soda were popular for the not-so-wealthy. I believe the first deodorant was available in the late 19th century.

Soap and talc power. Citrus and such were exotic and expensive products for many countries.
Soap was invented 3000 to 4000 years ago so it has been with us for a long time.

I think there was something you could mix up with bi-carb soda and water. They had all kinds of home made things like that that we take for granted today. Remember shampoo wasn't invented until 1950.

My Mom used Mum! It was a white cream, and you put it on with your fingers.
