I'm jumping at the first chance to leave freakin' Kentucky and come to a great state, Texas! (Excuse me, a great Republic!) I know some of you might call me a "yankee," but I'm willing to put up with that.

I've only been to Texas once. I fell SO in love with your state and its geographic diversity, warm people, beautiful parks, and thriving cities that I said, "I could live here." I even have a "Misplaced Texan" bumper sticker on my car; now some of you think I'm crazy, don't you?

What steps do I need to take to properly become a "naturalized" Texan? Thanks!

I think its a "state of mind" not a process.
Take a Texas History class at a local junior college, thats a great start. Realize we are Texicans! Proud of that fact.

Take a week and drive the state and see the sites, the on and off road ones. Don't be fooled by the pretty woman....they are pit vipers. I know- I am one! We smile and get every time. Buyer beware!

Eat BBQ from every place you can find and be come a "master" of knowing what is best. Got to the Houston Rodeo in February, its a life changing event.

Drink Shiner or Lonestar beer or sweet tea.

Know how to properly say the Indian and Mexican names for all the streets and cities in the state and just over the border, their is NO line for us, they are neighbors and family, not foreigners.

Mexia- ask some one to say this city name? Mah HAY yah.
Anna Nichol Smith's birth place. Its just fun to stump them!

The realize the "rest of the world" thinks we are dumb hicks and we like to keep them "Thinkin" that way, so they stay away. We have international reknowned cultural events, universities and NASA.... nah nah booh booh!

WE have the richest port city in the USA- Port of Houston. The most diverse communities in culture, religion and my god the FOOD is the best in the world. Plan to gain 10#'s and that's not joke. You can live very well on little money and live like a king with a little more. Your neighbors will be your family if you invite them to be, and its a wonderful place to raise kids.

I'm a Native Texan (born here), lived all over the world and still call Houston my home. Mind you have property in Bridgeport, Naples and soon New Mexico, so poor is not an consideration. So is life good?
H*E*L*L* yeah....

Did I mention I really do own cattle, an oil well and a cadillac?
Wear boots daily, to feed my own stock and love steak more than chicken! You can own 10-20 acres of land, for the price of one condo in Naples. No joke- its all true....I'm not telling a tall Texas tale.

This ain't no Urban Cowboy set....its funny to let folks think it.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing. You either are or are not a Texan. It is the love for this state. When you move here, get your driver's license and license plates, register to vote, and plunk down that deposit for electricity, you're a Texan. You sound like you are well on your way.

You can also go to the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio. They used to (and still may do so) give out official looking forms that entitle the bearer to be a Citizen of Texas.

Your daughter is an Army brat, like me. She will not ever have a place of origin and can most probably have a tough time with that the majority fundamental of questions, "Where are you from?" Take comfort in the fact that a lot of Texans are not born here. Just get down here and slap a bumper sticker on that says "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could!"

I have to agree with most everyone else. It's pretty impossible to become a "naturalized Texan" and if you have a Kentucky accent you'll always have someone asking where you're from. But good thing is, especially if you move to say Houston, it's soo diverse that no one will care. Good luck on your move, and welcome home!!!

Look online for a "King of the HIll" episode where Hank finds out he was actually born in New York City. His dad takes steps to get him "reborn" in Texas via a fake drowning.

To become a resident, you should move there and live there for at least a year, start paying taxes, get a TX driver's license, register to vote in Texas, etc.

I believe you just have to live in Texas for about one month before you are considered legally a Texan.

Here is some vocabulary you might want to use to fit in...

Fixin to.... Replaces "About to", "going to"
Tump...to knock over (combination of "tip" and "dump")
