I think it's both. I have good degrees but I also have a huge network range that has helped me get better jobs than I probably should have had.

Degrees don't hurt. Then again, being super attractive doesn't, either.
Connections, connections. Particularly with the sub-par hiring managers these days who barely know how to write a job description, much less hire appropriately.
There are exceptions: very technical fields - engineering, IT, medicine, maths - or academia. Even then, most analysts find that it's social skills and not simply ability that are most relevant to job advancement - who you know in the workplace, and how well they like you.

I believe that it's who you know that opens doors a whole lot easier for people.
But once your inside it's all about what you know. At least in most cases.
As unfair as that is, it's ingrained in our culture.
I wish there were more people with power and money that were open minded to "out of the club" types.
A good example of this is they guy presently sitting in the White House.

Both. At the same time, when lacking in both connections and knowledge, just having the right kind of personality can be of good use. Sometimes you just have to force the issue to get what you want.

I have always found that even though who you know can certainly help what you are actually capable of (what you know) is more likely to take you the farthest.
All things being equal, then who you know makes a big difference. If one is truly superior, what you know matters a lot more. At least for important positions.

Early in your career path you need to rely on what you know to get your foot in the door...but the people you know will sometimes help. Once you are in, it becomes more of a factor of who you know. Eventually, though, your contacts can get you only so far and then you are back to having to rely on what you know.

I think our idiot president is ample proof that it's who you know and into what class you were born that gets you the furthest in life.

For me it's been some of both but leaning to what I know that's got me this far in life. Having the right connections to relay what it is you know is probably the most beneficial to us all.

Who you know provides opportunity. What you know provides the resources to exploit the opportunities. But it is what you do that gets you ahead.

Not me, in most cases it's who you know that gets you ahead and sometimes it's who you...
you know what I mean.
