When I purchased the car, there were times when it would not start, I had the neutral switch replaced, it still wouldn't start on every now and again, however I learned to put it in neutral and like magic it would turn over. As of last week my car has been sitting because the neutral trick is no longer working. Everything else in the car comes on, but when I turn the key I get absolutely nothing. How do I know if my starter should be replaced or the neutral switch?

most likely the problem is the ignition switch electrical part

fallow the positive battery cable it goes to a solenoid there is a smaller 1 wire Post on it short or jump that to the positive cable if the ar cranks its the switch if it doesn't get out the test light and see how far the power goes that will tell you where the problem i and what to fix don't pull out the starter to test it its much better to test it in the car

That is a tough one. Does it click or anything when you turn the key? If so then the starter is bad. If no click then you still have the question and unfortunately the only way to test it is to have someone else help you with a voltage tester. You will have to locate the wire going to the starter solenoid turn the key and put the tester on the wire at the same time. It may just be a bad starter solenoid. Usually when the starter goes out it will malfunction a few times and you will know what the problem is, but if your car just quit starting all at once it is either the solenoid or the neutral switch. If you want to try and see if it is the solenoid then you should take a hammer and hit the solenoid a few times it is the little part of the starter. The reason for hitting it is because it is a large relay and will stick a little when it starts going out. Good Luck..

Do you hear a clicking noise when you try to start it? If you do, that is the relay to the starter. If that is clicking and the starter is not moving, then the starter probably doesn't need to be replaced. If you don't hear a clicking noise, try and replace the relay. It's like a $5 part that should plug right in. Those things go out fairly often.
