I am what I am. My friends and people I am close to know what that is. Am I proud of it? No. Why should I be? I am what I am.

So why should I make a big deal about it?

I certianly could not care less what somebody else wants or desires. That's between them and the people they associate with.

So what's the big deal?

I partly agree with you. This is a new way of thinking though, something older people don't seem to follow as easily. We've grown up with gay being okay, so to us it's not a big deal, so it seems weird even how people act sometimes.

But as for pride, that's where I think you may be going wrong. Pride isn't because you're LGBT, pride is because you're free to openly be LGBT.

But beyond being proud of the freedom to be LGBT, I agree that it shouldn't be as big a deal as most people make it.

I like to say I'm a guy who happens to be gay, not a gay guy. My sexuality is a part of me, doesn't define me.

And there does seem to be nothing more annoying than someone defining me for something I don't use to define myself.

Why is it necessary for some people to try to force it to be a sexless world, or only sexual activities, trends and signals that they approve of be allowed?
I sometimes act different from my sexual orientation just to yank the chains of those people who can't stand different. It helps define who my friends and who my enemies are. It also helps expand the boundaries of freedom, and since freedom is what matters to me, that makes it a worthwhile activity.
But then, I live in the land of buckrail fences, and obviously we have been a little lax about defending the freedoms of others. My apologies.

I don't feel that need. But in a public situation sometimes we're cornered by others.
Wicky Wow Wow recently posted a question that is a prime example.
At work, as inappropriate as it is to inquire about someone's personal life/sex life, assumptions are made about co-workers. Others put "family" photos on their desks or at their work stations, when we put up OUR "family" photos, we get all sorts of strange questions.
In some states, we can actually loose our jobs if our bosses merely ASSUME as to what our sexuality is.
In some states we can be denied housing or hotel rooms if people ASSUME our sexuality.

Some people identify themselves by their religion, others by their hobbies, or the sports team they follow, so why not their sexuality. If you're speaking of gays, lesbians and transgendered people, then it is very much who they are, and to demonstrate bravely that they are proud to be what they are despite the villification, despite the discrimination and despite the bigotry they validate their lives in defiance of the small minded folk who would demean and harm them. I think it is a great thing they do, and I have to say that their courage is amazing.

From reading these answers, I have come to the conclusion that telling others whom you have sex with does a couple of things. First it gets you the attention that people seek when they come out, and it also is an identifying point when you join the gay community and accept the lifestyle.

It isn't necessary, but many people feel it is.
Others feel if you are straight, then you don't need to, but if you are Gay, then you should. They feel if you don't then you are secretly undressing them and wanting them., and they need to know so they can be on guard to stop you from trying to put the make on them.

People love to show off. I show my Asian girlfriend off all of the time. What's the difference?

Good luck
