I mean, is it just getting warmer?

No just the idea not that I'm saying that the sun is getting closer but it's not just getting warmer- it's not the same witht he idea of the sun being closer to us?

The Earth's overall average surface temperature is determined by a couple of factors.

The nearness to the Sun is one.

But as the Earth receives heat from the Sun, it also re-radiates heat into space. Carbon dioxide is a heat-trapping gas. It will allow the infra-red heat of the Sun onto the Earth, but slows the amount of heat that ordinarily re-radiates from the Earth.

The extensive use of fossil fuels over the last 100 years has contributed to an accumulation of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In recent times, with the technology to measure accurately, we are realizing that the levels of carbon dioxide are increasing faster than plant-life can photosynthesize and reduce them.

In some ways, you could say that the effect would be the same as if the Earth had moved nearer to the Sun without any carbon dioxide increases. But, in fact, no change in Earth's orbit has actually happened. It's more like being in bed during summer and adding blankets.

The Sun is not getting noticably warmer. If it were causing global warming on the Earth, we would see all the other planets heating up too - and we don't. We've been checking.

And the Earth gets closer and further away from the Sun every year due to our elliptical orbit. That is not causing global warming; that's been going on for billions of years.

Global warming is from the effect of atmospheric gases trapping reflected long wave infrared radiation from the earths surface within the earths atmosphere causing temperatures to rise. If those atmospheric gases weren't present all the heat radiation received by the earth would have been reflected back out to space and temperatures would have been below zero no matter how close the sun was. Only surface temperatures would have risen if the sun were to come closer and there was no atmosphere though, with the presence of the greenhouse gases (as they are called) the greenhouse effect will simply be increased/amplified and the greenhouse effect is needed to maintain the life sustaining temperatures on earth.

No. The sun is not getting nearer.
When sunlight hits the earth, much is converted to infrared radiation. CO2 in the atmosphere scatters this back so the rays cannot be radiated back into space. The more CO2 there is in the atmosphere, the stronger this effect gets. That's global warming in a nutshell.
It is, like always, more complicated than that. For example, the average global temperature going up does not mean that it isn't getting colder in some places. But to go into all of that would be a bit too much for this forum.

No it doesn't because Earth has been continously orbiting the sun at the same distance for billions of years at the same pace, and distance. Global Warming has to do with pollution, and the Green house effect (when the UV Rays from the sun hit the earth, then reflect Radiation back into Outer Space).

Probably the warming caused by CO2 in the air would be similar to warming caused by the Sun getting closer or hotter, but I am not totally sure. You need to ask a meteorologist or climatologist, because that isn't really an astronomy or space question.

No the sun is not getting closer to us. Global warming is still a very contentious idea. Global warming has happened in the past, whether the present cycle is down to man's activities is still very debatable. There are many instances of unseasonable weather. Samuel Pepys mentioned in his diaries that he was travelling from Devon back to London in February when the weather was so hot he was plagued with flies. Until someone can provide me with incontrovertable proof of man's guilt in the present cycle I will not believe it.
