Are they as bigoted as these in USA?
No empathy for anyone who's different, want to abolish all welfare programs and let the poor sink or swim?
And do they tend to be relatively poor themselves?

No, the same rules don't apply in the U.K. They don't fall along the same boundaries or have the same concerns as us in the U.S.

If you wanted to fit U.K. right-wingers on our political spectrum, they would most likely qualify as moderate to liberal Democrats. Even right wingers there agree on the basic ideas of universal health care and a social safety net, they just disagree about the levels of funding. Also, you will not find nearly as many fundamentalist or puritanical Christians. Less fire and brimstone, more compassion.

The premise of your question assumes that USA Right "wingers" are bigots which is bigot ted in itself. I think before you enter the political arena, you abolish your racist thoughts and opinions. Only then can you see others in their own true light.
