The 4th would seem to provide a great setting for the All-Star game as it would be played the same day as America's Independence in cementing baseball as America's past-time.

Several reasons.

1. July 4, being a national holiday, tends to have games sell pretty well no matter what (the Blue Jays always request a road game on the date). No reason to surrender that.

2. July 4 doesn't land on the same day of the week every year. Unreliable.

3. By scheduling the ASG on a Tuesday and taking the Monday-Wednesday break, MLB doesn't sacrifice the more lucrative weekend (Fri-Sun) dates from the schedule.

4. TV nets (currently Fox) like having the ASG on a Tuesday. It's a high-value event, and getting eyeballs on a midsummer Tuesday isn't easy. Having the HRD on the preceding Monday is more a fringe benefit, but it's a nice boost for usually lackluster non-football Monday night ratings.

Typically the ASG is the first Tuesday after July 4th (not always), and it works pretty well.

The All-Star game has been the 2nd Tuesday in July for my entire life. I think the idea sounds nice, but you would have a lot of upset fans if they did. I would be willing to bet that most stadiums sell-out on the 4th. They are giving all the fans what they want this way.

They try to make it at the half-way point of the season. Having it on July 4 every year would create scheduling and travel problems. The game is always on a Tuesday; most series end on Sunday, then the players have a day off for travel and PR stuff, then have time afterwards to get back to their teams for a new series to start on Thursday or Friday.

They will never schedule the All-Star game on a holiday because many fans love to go to ballgames on that day and most stadiums are filled to capacity. Teams do not want to give up that revenue in their own parks. The All-Star game will always draw a lot of attention and there would be no added value to schedule that game on the 4th of July.

Well, it's a major holiday. Many people have the day off, and like spending time with their families. Many people do fireworks and enjoy time off of work. I don't think many people would go to the All Star Game if it was on the 4th of July.

The all-star game is always played on either the 2nd or 3rd Tuesday in July. The weekday that the 4th of July falls on always changes every year.

I can't recall the All-Star game ever being played that early in July. It is traditionally held on a Tuesday. It is most convenient for working folks to attend games on weekends, so there's usually a full slate on Sat. and Sun. then Monday is an off day.

Tuesday is the least troublesome, in terms of scheduling.

It is all about marketing. Everyone wants to go to a July 4th game. It is a big sell out day. The more games that are played that means more money for MLB.

Because then only one city would benefit from large crowds on the 4th, instead of 15.

This is the same reason the NL has 16 teams while the AL only has 14 teams. If each league had 15 teams, then two teams (one in ech league) would always have the night off. More significantly, it means that every weekend, you would have two teams that aren't making any money.

Thats not a bad idea. It just seems that the last few years at least they're always doing it on a Tuesday so they can have a Monday and Wednesday as off days and then start 4 games series from Thursday-Sunday to keep the schedule going.
