1)patent the idea

2)patent all variations of the idea (surely if you are smart enough to come up with a "big money" idea, then you are smart enough to brainstorm how small variations may threaten your specific idea so you want to protect it)

3)AFTER the patent is approved, write a proposal to use when pitching the idea, then I would copywrite this entire report as well. I a believe in overkill where protecting intellectual property is concerned.

You can tell me! ;)

Some people type out the idea & then mail a copy of this to themselves. It is post marked & dated. Just don't open it until you have to appear in court to prove it was your idea. Let the judge open it.
Done.
Proving that they didn't come up with an idea just like it around the same time is the tough part. Try to obtain a patent ASAP.
Contact a patent lawyer in your area & they can guide you through the process.

Keep a journal regarding the development of your invention, and sign and date the entries in the journal. Patented or not, this helps to establish when you invented the item, which can be crucial if someone else tries to claim the invention as their own.

Have them sign a non-disclosure agreement? You should ask a lawyer who specializes in this area.
