Modern living has given people the choice of whether to be healthy or unhealthy.

In the retirement community where I live there are hundreds of people who are incredibly fit and healthy. We have a group of people who hike at least 20 miles a week. We have a group of people who are avid skiers and make several ski trips a year. We have people who do tennis, golf, swimming and do these activities really aggressively. None of the people in these groups are less than 65 and most of them are closer to 80 years old. I play in a music group where more than a third of the group is over 85 years old.

I think the thing that most amazes us about modern life is how unfit many of the young people are. A lot of us have grandchildren who cannot keep up with us if we go on a walk! How bad is that!!!!!! I led a walk around a historic location for my grandson's summer camp and nearly 1/3rd of the kids had to drop out. They couldnt keep up with me, and I wasnt even walking fast. On the other hand, many of the kids were in great shape, so I'm not condemning them all. As I said, it's a choice.

Excellent healthy food is available. Lots and lots of different activities are available. But you can choose to eat junk food and be a couch potato and die of a coronary at age 58....
