This is a unique plant to the world, it was discovered by the British in India in 1882, when they found that its exceptionally large, multi-coloured, retractable flower heads were perfect to protect the lily like complexion of the Raj European ladies from the colonial sun. Since imported in huge numbers all over the globe they are mainly used as a patio plant. botanists are are still out as to its proper name. Transplantation is quite easy, just secure it in a container filled with sand or even water, no need for further irrigation or feeding. Does not like wind or rain and will stand quite happily for months in summer, in the garden shed.

Stychius umbeliflorus. Quite tender so needs a sheltered spot or you will lose the flower head over next doors fence. Comes in many colours though the plaid effect is quite rare. keep indoors over winter (needs very little attention) bring out in may but be careful- this plant does not like the wet summers.
Propagate using B&Q chequecard and live happily ever after.

Umbiols arisilous. A splendid shrub. Put it in water and soak well for an hour. You will need to buy rooting compost or you can use well drained sandy soil. Plant about 6 inches into the soil and place in partial shade. You might be lucky and get flowers in June, but do not prune. They don't like it.
