Usually the friends fade out and disappear. The basis of the friendships when married are couple related and married people are often uncomfortable with a single in the mix.

Well, most divorced people discover that they have been cut out of what their thought was "their" circle because married folks find it awkward to have a single in their midst. Women with kids discover that they have problems more in common with other "single" women with kids and men discover that guys tend to be possessive about their wives when a single male is around.

I think it depends on who the friends got along with better and if the couple who split expect them to choose sides.
My husbands bf got divorced and we never see his wife anymore but the bf is still close to us. My best friend all through school and university was with the same guy for 13years and when they split I remained friends with both but b/c my best fiend couldn't deal with the fact that I got along with his new girlfriend she bailed on our friendship.
