I really enjoyed the movie, and have seen it more than once. Not a true story, though, and I had a couple issues with it. First, and this may be ultra trivial, but no conductor holds the baton in his left hand. And being left-handed has nothing to do with it. The right hand beats time, the left gives cues and directions. The ending, there's no way the band could have sounded that good (but I can accept this, it's a movie, not reality). Next, if the governor and former student were so grateful of Mr. Holland, why didn't she do something to help save the program? She definitely had the power to do that. And finally, and also the biggest issue, was the way he handled Rowena. Support a teenager in dropping out of school and running away from home so she can go to NEW YORK CITY????? Yeah, he got her a place to stay, but still... New York would eat her alive, and there's about ten thousand singers in New York trying to make it. Maybe that's why she wasn't at the reuinion at the end? However, none of these problems kept me from enjoying the movie and showing it to my students.

It is not a real story per se, although similar situations happen all over the country as funding is cut for arts in education. At the moment, there's a pretty big movement to support arts, so that trend is reversing.

That is one of my favorite movies. It has great character development over the 40 years it takes place. I think it is a realistic protrayal of what music teachers go through and it is a nice balance of Mr. Holland's teaching life and his personal life. Richard Dreyfuss is a great actor. And with the wide span of what the movie covers, they also throw in the deaf issues, which I think is great because you don't get to see much of the deaf society in movies and pop culture. The movie covers a lot, but nothing is overdone and nothing is underdone.

It wasn't, but it did spawn a real life foundation that aims to follow the example set by the film. The foundation was set up by the late film composer Michael Kamen, who did the music to the film.

Writer Patrick Sheane Duncan spent his teen years in Hamilton, MI not from Holland, MI. He admittedly came up with the script while sitting in an L.A. traffic jam and heard of teacher/budget cuts. He recalled the teachers who had an influence on his life back in Hamilton/Holland thus the title. He has stated that Glenn Holland is the combination of two teachers who influenced him.
