He didn't eat any of the carton. Sensible Jeremy! He knew that cardboard would be rather indigestible and that ice-cream would taste much better than cardboard ever could.

What he did eat was 3 x 100 / 16 % of the ice-cream = 18.75%

Since Jeremy ate 3 ounce of ice-cream out of the 16 ounce of ice-cream which makes up the carton, then
3/16 is the fraction showing the relationship of what he ate over the total present.
and the percentage of the fraction of what he ate is therfore
3/16*100
=3/16*100/1
which when cross multiplied is
=3*100/16*1
=300/16
=18.75%

He ate 3/16 = 0.1875 = 18.75% of the carton.

To convert a fraction into a percentage, first perform the division to get a decimal result. Then multipy the decimal by 100%.

Easy way to remember how to figure out percentages:

3/16 = x/100. Solve for x

3/16 * 100 = x

300/16 = x

18.75 = x
