If you are in the UK and referring to rewiring property by means of the wall cavity, this is not permitted by the wiring regulations. You CAN wire between innner wall and plasterboard or lath and plaster.

If you mean to retreive a wire which is pushed down a cavity then unwind an old wire coathanger, bend a hook in one end, and feed this through a hole in the wall to try to hook the cable. Best way is to rotate the hook until you feel it and pull slowly! If the wire is not in the cavity, use some string with a weight (eg a large nail) to help drop the string down the cavity which can then be tied to the cable once hooked through. Hope this helps!

Don't you just attach it to the old wiring then pull it through? If thats not possible then you have to expose the cavity through the wall and refill after wiring. As far as I know anyway!

You should always use a "part p" registered electrician when undertaking a house rewire in the UK. Using a "part p" registered firm has numerous advantages:
The firm deal with all the new rules for you

The firm is qualified to carry out electrical work to BS 7671, the national safety standard

You will receive a certificate to confirm their work follows the new rules

You do not have to pay Building Control charges

You have the option of taking out an insurance-backed guarantee for the work

You have access to a formal complaints procedure if you are not happy with the work

Electricians use these when they need to pull cables under floorboards or down stud walls. But you are not allowed to use the cavity between walls.

Electricians use a "fish-wire" to gain access into cavities., you might be able to borrow one from a sympathetic electrician.

If it brick/blockwork you don't.
It's not permitted under the regs.

Stud walls: easiest thing is to expose the cavity and repair after.
