Use a router for auto DHCP IP address, or a hub and manually set the IP address to the same block, ie. 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3, use teh same workgroup name.

As long as you are in posession of an 802.11 wireless gateway or (router) of some type you should be good to go!
Most routers can be configured for "open" networks although not reccomended because it is not secure. By default most broadband routers use 64 bit WEP encryption. This is just a fancy way of saying it takes a 10 character password to gain access to the router. As long as your notebooks are running windows xp you should be able to go to Start>My Network Places> Then on the left under "network tasks" click on "view network connections". At this point over in the white area there should be an icon under LAN or high speed internet that alludes to a wireless network adapter of some type. You will then click on that to configure your wireless adapter. I hope this helps you. If not contact the manufcturer of your notebook computer and they can assist you further.

Give them different valid (ie not in use on another computer, right subnet mask) IP addresses within the range of the network... or let the DHCP server allocate IP addresses to both of them.

Other than that, setting up two is just twice as much work as setting up one!
