Just read on the BBC website that a 3 year old daughter of a British oil worker has been kidnapped in Nigeria. Apparently this is the third child to be kidnapped in Nigeria by armed gunmen in recent weeks. The other two children were returned unharmed after a huge ransom was paid. How terrible is this?

After all the McCann coverage, it will be interesting to see how the British Media cover this and indeed perhaps the McCann's could contribute some of their huge wad of cash to the parents of this child and all the other parents of missing children to help with their search for their loved ones.

Praying for this child's safe return and that of ALL missing children.

You mean you want the McCann's to pay the ransom for the kidnapped children? I suppose that is always a thought, but wouldn't that encourage the kidnappers to take more children?

I hope that this case gets appropriate media attention. Of course the circumstances are very different. Margaret Hill, the little girl in Nigeria, was taken at gunpoint in an unstable country in which there have been a number of similar kidnappings. I don't doubt for a moment that parents' anguish is every bit as acute as that of Madeleine McCann's parents. Clearly, though, the strategy for recovering her will be vastly different and I expect this will be reflected in the media attention.

The cases are not similar at all. Kidnappings, including children, in Nigeria are almost always for ransom and there is a good chance of their safe return when the ransom has been paid. Although the authorities may not know where they are held, they usually know who is holding them (which group). Maddy, as far as we know, has not been kidnapped for ransom. She has been abducted by people whose motives are far more despicable.
It's unfair to place the responsibility of paying for the ransom with the McCanns. Where does it stop? What about asking them to pay for drugs to save African children? But then what about the poor Indian children? And the Brazilian street kids? Etc.
Why don't you argue that one of the many millionaires or directors of private equity firms who pay hardly any tax help pay for it? Or, what about the oil companies for which these people work?

It will generate as much publicity if the wealthy oil man hires a pr rep all sorts of lawyers is a freemason. etc etc etc.... The McCanns brought this publicity on themselves. They wanted to be the center of attention. Praying for the safe return of all the missing children out there.

This is a terrible situation. The little girl is the
daughter of a British man who owns the bar
where five oil workers were kidnapped last
August. The people who stoop so low to take
children to further their cause, and extract money from the parents, are unfeeling ,horrible people.
Poor little mite her emotions must be in a
turmoil. Let us all keep her in prayer.

The company and government will be doing all they can as they wouldn't want the oil industry to be damaged by such bad publicity.I agree - why is the child even there? Mind you many Nigerian children are being sent here for a "better life" -

Its a terrible crime but my question is what on earth was she doing there?

I'm in the oil industry and my company has banned all travel to Nigeria because its currently too dangerous. All families should have been out of there long ago.

I do hope she is returned safely.

Update: The guy isn't an oil worker but runs a bar for ex-pats in Port Harcourt. He married a local girl. So I can understand why the family is there but it was still an awful risk. Those bar-owners do pretty good and he is now paying the cost of his success.

I hope they get the child back safe and sound. With it hitting the media I think the public will put up the money. If this ransom is paid up then they will keep taking children and getting away with it.

This is awful - but I cannot understand anyone who would take a 3y/o to Nigeria (or most African countries for that matter). Unfortunately there is so much corruption that the authorities more than likely take a percentage of the ransom.
I hope the poor child is returned safely.

This is horrific. What kind of people would do something so awful? Seriously, don't they have families?
Um...as far as the McCann's contributing to them is concerned, as nice & good & neighbourly as it sounds, i don't think they would. It would totally be like giving up on their own search for Madeleine & thats not going to happen.
I do hope they do get the same coverage as Madeleine & i honestly think that with the amount of time & energy the bunch of us have spent on the McCanns, its up to us to find out all we can about this other little lost one & do our best to bring about awareness here as well. Shall we try?
