Now I see that it has created a society that is detached from real life cause-and-effect knowledge. Everyone's in a fantasy world, with unreal expectations and no idea where to go except to follow what they see on screen.

It depends... On a personal view..

Cinema has nothing to do with the society.
When a person watches a movie.. for instance, a movie on terrorism. No matter how the movie transcripts terrorism, one should be mature enough to understand and think what is wrong or right. One should judge the pro's and con's of the message in the movie.

Movies are harmless. The mindset and thinking capabilities of the human mind is the harmful agent.
When i watch a movie.. No matter what the message is given i tend to analyse and think to myself is it (what the movie says) a good thing or a bad thing..

It all falls on how one perceives it.. compared to whether the movie being good or bad...
The impact of movies on society can be good and bad in the same time.. this is all depending on how the society takes the movie.

Even the most 'harmless' movie can become corrupt if the society takes it negatively..

I've heard it said that, in the past, we've had an industrial - military complex that was dominant in the world. I recently read an article that stated that the entertainment complex is beginning to rival the industrial - military complex. So, I think it would be safe to say that cinema has a tremendous impact on society. Specifically, cinema allows us to document and dramatize the events of the past, see where we went wrong, and work toward a better future. That's just one example.

To understand the impact of cinema on society, you first have to imagine what society would be like without it. There would be no tabloids; less controversy. There wouldn't be a medium for transporting information to people who do not like watching the news or do not have the internet. There are many things that cinema has given us that we cannot live without.
