It is a barbaric practice still undertaken in a minor way globally.

It is also called FGM.. Female Genital Mutilation. It can vary from removal of the clitoris to the complete removal of vulva.

It is typically done on young women by older women who are culturally entrenched and know nothing better or men in the 'tribe' or community. In rare instances medical practitioners will perform the procedure.

This is a classic example of female oppression through lack of education and experience.

Most commonly, the prepuce, part of the clitoris and parts of the labia are cut off.
Women perpetuate the cycle of female genital cutting. They give the same reasons as people in America do when when they get their boys circumcised. They say it is cleaner, that it looks better, that it reduces infection etc.

They do it out of culture.

Of course, every national medical organisation in the world says it is NOT medically beneficial or recommended to circumcise a boy or a girl.
I feel it is a human rights violation to do it to a child when they are unable to consent. Chopping parts off of someone else's body, irrespective of the reasons, unless immediately medically required, while they are unable to consent is wrong.

Female circumcision is the removal of the clitoris.
This is practiced in some cultures to insure that the female does not have to ability to orgasm and therefore will not desire sex.

Strictly speaking, it's removing the "hood" or layer of skin that covers the woman's clitoris so that it can more easily be stimulated, making sex more pleasurable for her.

The procedure that is often in the news is actually female castration, the cutting out of the woman's clitoris altogether, making it HARDER for her to be sexually gratified. It's the equivalent of cutting off the glans (head) of a man's penis. Aside from sadistically torturing girls (it's usually done to girls just entering puberty and without any anesthetic), it's only purpose is so that she won't be tempted to have sex and will remain a virgin until she's married, and as a woman she won't be tempted to have sex with anyone other than her husband.

It is illegal, but it involves removing the female clitoris and sewing up the woman's vagina...often done when they are just girls. Some cultures such as the Somalians believe it stops women from losing their virginity before marriage. Its barbaric.

It is the cutting of the labia or outer " flaps of skin" in the genital area of women. sometimes it is taken further and the clitoris is actually cut out. Either way it is practiced in some African countries and the Asian sub Continent and is illegal under UN law.

It is practiced in some African cultures. The clit is removed and the vagina is sewn up with only enough room left in the opening for your period.

A vile practice. removal of the clitoris and sometimes stitching of the vulva to allow just enough space to urinate.

That should be illegal. Some deeply insecure man with ED invented it.
