Soft drugs are "tolerated" in Amsterdam. They have coffee shops where you can buy marijuana and hashish. They also have smartshops where you can buy mushrooms. It is not all that there is to the city. You can avoid this culture by not going into these places, if you are not interested in experiencing them. You must be 18 years old to enter any of these facilities.

SOME drugs that are illegal in many places are legal in Amsterdam. People are allowed to posess a small amount of pot or mushrooms, and you can go to cafes and order these items and use them in the cafe. However, most "hard" drugs are illegal. Cocaine, heroin, meth, etc are all illegal and you can be arrested for posessing, buying, using these. The Netherlands has a very progressive way of dealing with drug use in its criminal justice system. Rather than locking people up, they send them to rehab and really do everything they can to get a person clean rather than just sending them to prison. It's more of a health issue than a criminal issue there.

no. drugs are illegal, with the exception of weed and alcahol. it is illegal to smoke weed in public though, like on the streets, trainstations, and public buildings like libraries, town halls concert halls etc.

you can legally buy (if 18+) and smoke weed in private or in coffeshops. Growing weed is not legal, selling weed only if you have a permit to do so.

xtc cocain heroine meth etc are all still illegal and they will probably remain so. Poppers are also illegal. though it is not government policy to attack smalltime users (they target dealers and traficcing) you can get arrest on posession charges id you cause a neusance or vandalise under the influence etc.

p.s. its not just amsterdam, its a nationwide policy.

Drugs that most nations consider illegal (such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin) are generally "tolerated" in the Netherlands. Especially marijuana - although it technically is illegal, it is tolerated, nobody will bother you if you smoke it discreetly and in designated smoking places. The Netherlands also has the good sense to realize that possession of harder drugs is more of a personal problem than a crime against humanity (American authority's view) and punishment for possession of such drugs reflects that realization.

Yes, but only in small quantity. If you're addicted, you can go to the government and get some. They try to make you give up, but if you can't they'll give you a little bit.
