The "best" computer really is one you build yourself - that way you get exactly what you , yourself , want.

Having said that I have 3 Dell systems here and am buying on average of 1 more each month.

Why? Simply put , I run my pcs 24/7 and have found them to be very reliable.
Additionally I buy them at auctions so get them for a very good price.

Why are they on 24/7? I am doing a lot of animation and need to run them to perform all the calculations as possible. All bar one are connected on a local network to each other to function as a rendering farm for Blender - hence why I am adding each month for more processing power.

The other is connected to the internet permanently for my business needs and because I can't afford a machine to crash or corrupt data , I use Linux - that way I never ever need to worry about viruses , spyware or trojans. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a permanent net connection.

As for selecting what you want , it really comes down to your budget. Once you know how much you can afford to spend then that will determine what sort of pc you will end up with.

If you want a cheap desktop that is only going to be used for basic apps like you stated then I would go into PC world or Tesco and buy whatever is their cheapest model.

There will not be a model of PC that is being sold in the shops as new which can not handle the basic apps, so just go for the cheapest.

But as to answering the best model I would say DELL, that is my opinion from working as a Hardware engineer at a large company that only use Dell machines, it is however only my opinion.

over the past 3 years i have bought 4 Dell computers for myself and members of my family, pound for pound they are slightly more expensive than many others, but, the quality has been superb, the customer support is 2nd to none, overall i have had 3 small problems, that in itself is pretty good, the problems have been resolved extremely quickly and efficiently. i have no complaints with Dell at all, from ordering to delivery everything was first class, the support afterwards is just incredible, i have to buy 2 more machines this year as presents, i am going to buy Dell. the first computer i bought from Dell i decided to upgrade, i have done it with the help of Dell support, everything was very straightforward and simple, i guess Dell is the best. good luck.

there is a reason Dell is not sold it the shops....its Shite.....
I bought a new PC - Dimensions...all singing all dancing, had it two months, not used very often. I called for 4 hours talking to plebs in India, cant talk to anyone in the uk, im not technically minded other than plug in plug out.....and I got so totally p'd off with the whole situtation, after talking to three "engineers" then their manager, they arranged to collect on the tuesday, no replacement item, no pick up, called again, 2 hours later, manager called to confirm collection next day, did not arrive, due to technical problems.....They are now booked for a service engineer next Monday.....not holding my breath.

friggin dell, don't get that. they don't like giving service and support and on top of that they gave me the wrong memory but won't give me a refund. they said its because windows xp reads it differently, when my friends pc reads fine and its dell. try hp apple would be my top choice although its expensive, but not as expensive as dells notebooks now days.

get a cheap dell. those are pretty good but if your using it for internet make sure you have virus protection. i don't know why but my dad bought a new dell and i don't know if its wht he looks at or has crappy security but it seems to get a lot of spy ware. but don't let that discourage you from getting one. they are still really good
