Profound question! I would go back in time and take the rifle away from the sniper who shot JFK., give Hitler a lisp, guide Eddie Sacks away from his crash in not sure of the year 1966 ? Indy 500, tell president Nixon no break in is needed he will win, the gloves fit OJ, and lastly have the ability turn the planes away from the trade center and land safety.
After all that hard work I would like to know the lotto #s before their picked so I could continue with the question above.

I would go back 2000 or so years to the time of Christ around the Jerusalem and Galilee area and find out exactly what went on there. For the world! As a second choice I would travel back 65 million years or so, to anywhere there had been dinosaurs, and find out what exactly caused their extinction. Again for the World.

Assumption - I would retain all my knowledge from now and remember the trip when I come back and that I come back when I want.
I would want to go back to visit with Christ. I want to understand how to interpret his words and how he would suggest we straighten out the mess that we have made of his words.
