I do like Marvel and the occasional Manga, but the best comic book I've ever read is "Palestine" by Joe Sacco. He's a journalist who travelled in Gaza and the West Bank in the early 90s. It's an excellent book - one of the best explanations of the history of the region and the effect of the current ill feeling

V. Good Question.
If were talking manga here then probably 'A Midnight Opera' by Hans Steinbach. Remarkably unique action sequences and a beautiful romance between two immortals.
The Sandman series are amazing being a beautiful portrayal of the universe and beyond.
Maus by Art Speigelman is possibly the most affecting narrative ever done about the Holocaust.

I am torn between two series - see below.
The "Authority" by Warren Ellis is the best I read in ages: it's not your usual superhero flick, more like your modern anti-hero, very much human. Link below:

Jenny Sparks (superhero from UK) is the one to hold the best episodes.
Then there is "Strangers in Paradise" by Terry Moore:

A mix of characters who are linked by Ktchoo, the main character, and Francine, her girlfriend. Some mob/Yakuza violence involved, with interesting psychological and comical moments. The story develops, but not too chronologically, more like memories of things past and current action. High in action and friendship, great serial to follow, soon to finish (alas!).

Anything at all by Daniel Clowes, Blankets by Craig Thompson, Dork by Evan Dorkin, One Bad Rat (can't remember who wrote it), Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (shame about the rubbish film) and From Hell.
My absolute favourite writer is Daniel Clowes though.

The Archie comic books. The characters have good-looking young looks, dressed in the latest styles, some-how reflect every-day life, the story lines/plots are humorous, entertaining, and make fun-filled relaxing recreation for old and young alike.

My dad absolutely loves these comics! Makes him feel like a kid again. I'll go in to say goodnight and Mum is sitting up reading John Grisham or Danielle Steel, and he's Dad reading Donald Duck!!

If you are refering to specific issues - then Neil Gaiman's 'Dream of a Thousand Cats' (part of the Dream series) or possible a comic called St Swithin's Day (I can't remember the author). If you are refering to titles, then Gaiman's Dream series, or his 1602, or Ellis' Preacher series. A difficult choice.
