Evil unscrupulous fanatics pray on the insecure and turn their fear into blind hatred. They become sheep following along with rage eating into their souls.

People must be convinced that they are fighting a great evil, and that their sacrifice will have significance and create a greater good.

Often, religion is a big motivator: religion is a means of pandering to the innately human desire for certainty about things unknown. Because certainty is what is sought by people involved in religion, this is what is provided by many successful religious practitioners- they reinforce the effect by keeping people closely involved in the group, away from outside influences that will pull them away or make them re-think the simplistic certainties. And because religious people are doing 'god's work' it is easy to make them put aside humanitarian considerations.

Sometimes, other ideologies can replace religion with a political system or patriotism/nationalism, but religion is the most frequent and successful tool.

This works for all people all the time, (the IRA, the Baader-Meinhof gang, the Red Brigades, al Qaeda, the Irgun and Stern gangs.

Culture. Some groups grow up thinking the acts they do, will serve a higher purpose and they'll automatically get into "heaven" for fighting against the tyranny of man (whoever that happens to be according to each culture group). It's more than a misdirection.. it's a way of life. People are brainwashed into believing things. It's so big... I don't think people think of it as terrorist attacks, rather, they are just doing what they believe and fighting against those who oppose their beliefs. Then there are probably some crazy people too - homicidal and bitter for what cards life has dealt to them, and how they feel unfairly or unrighteously violated. Finally.. it seems many of the terror attacks are in the name of some religion. These go back to beliefs people have. People live, fight and die for religion.

Well, imagine that you are a young single male with healthy testosterone who lives in a society that will not permit you to have sex or drink beer, where there are no regular major sporting events; imagine if, in addition, you have a limited education and poor employment prospects. Because you have no money you cannot marry, and if you cannot marry you cannot have sex or a family.

Then along comes a self-appointed religious teacher who tells you that a certain group or nationality of people are responsible for all your disappointments in life, and further tells you that if you kill any of those people your God will reward you in heaven with lots of sex, good wine, and happiness.

It's actually quite an easy sell. When you have nothing to really live for and hate the world, then killing and dying is pretty easy.

is it that different when you hear an american boy say he is willing to give his life for his country. this type of devotion to politics and patriotism is just a sign of immiturity that politicians in every country (and terrorist group) exploit. young people want very badly to believe strongly in something and they haven't yet acquired families and careers that give them outlets for this fanaticism.
