Don't just put the 5 best players, but make a team that could actually play together. Ones that have the same style (ei, don't put Shaquille O'Neal with Leandro Barbosa). Don't stuff it with all shooters (Kobe Bryant and Gilbert Arenas would be horrible teammates together).

Make it somewhat like the traditional starting 5 of a point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center, but if you want to go without a true center or something like that, go for it.

Correct answer:

PG Jason Kidd
SG LeBron James
SF Dirk Nowitzki
PF Tim Duncan
C Chris Bosh

run it half court style. No one would stand a chance. You have 3 dominant big men, one of which is more of an outside guy to add some 3 point shooting, along with LeBron. Kidd fits better than Nash in the system, but the best point guard skill-wise is Nash.

Problems everyone had:
1. Shaq sucks, he is an empty shell of his former self. He does not belong anywhere near this line up
2. Tony Parker is still not even close to Nash or Kidd. I don't care if he won a title, you stick Kidd of Nash on instead of him, and they'd have won every title in the last 5 years.
3. The only truely elite player on the Spurs in general is Tim Duncan. Stop adding on guys like Horry. It's not even like he starts every game for them.
4. Kobe Bryant shouldn't play on this team. He ruins chemistry and would require the ball to much. LeBron and Nowitzkki do what he does, which is hit shots.

Here's my team (the first ones listed are starters, and the others are bench players):

Point Guards: 1.Tony Parker 2.Steve Nash 3.Jason Kidd

Shooting Guards: 1.Manu Ginobili 2.Michael Finley 3.Tracy McGrady

Small Forwards: 1.Shawn Marion 2.Bruce Bowen 3.Vince Carter

Power Forwards: 1.Tim Duncan 2.Kevin Garnett 3.Robert Horry

Centers: 1.Amare Stoudemire 2.Shaquille O'Neal 3.Ben Wallace

I feel this would be an unstoppable force on the court with a great starting line up and great bench players.

PG- Steve Nash
SG- Kobe Bryant
SF- Kevin Garnett
PF- Tim Duncan
C- Shaquille O'Neal

*I do hope you remember that KG used to play SF for Minnesota before.

Reasons?
1) 4 out of the 5 (because I'm not sure if Nash has) has played together in the All-Star Game.

2) All around players in terms of both offense and defense. (But a little bit shady on which kind of shaq you are thinking of and about Nash)

3) This cast of stars will keep Kobe in check (because he claims that "star" power is what he really needs

4) Nash is a smart PG. This means he can adapt his playing style to half-court or fast break.

5) Nash has so many diff options! He's got great finishers in every position.

Heres my go,
somethin thats not so overwhelming, and has a key element in each position
Point guard - Jason Kidd
Shooting Guard - Kobe Byrant
Small Forward - Bruce Bowen
Power Forward - Tim Duncan
Center - Amare Stoudemire

you guys might question why I put Bruce Bowen in here, lol, I tried making a lineup that had everything defense and offense, two of the best defensive players in the NBA, duncan and Bowen
plus Jason Kidd's all around-ness, Amare's stamina and sheer force, Tim's fundamentals, Bowen's defensive powers, and Kobe's unstoppable offensive.
Tell me what ya think, I think its better than puttin a whole bunch of snotty shooters/pointhoggers that wouldn't give up a single point in their stats.
I tried to spread it evenly, I know Kidd, Duncan, and Bowen wouldn't mind givin up points on their stats.

Clyde Drexler
Tim Duncan
Michael Jordan
Scottie Pippen
Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
Patrick Ewing
Magic Johnson
David Robinson
John Stockton
Charles Barkley
Jason Kidd
Basically the core of the 1992 Dream Team (who played greatly at the Olympics) and adding them up with cool but efficient players like Duncan, Robinson and Kidd. This is formidable.

C - Greg Oden
PF - Tim Duncan
SF - Lebron James
SG - Kobe Bryant
PG - Tony Parker

Why Oden? I'm assuming Oden in his rookie year will do something like 16 ppg, 10rpg, 3bpg and I think he would work fantastic with Duncan. I would put this starting five against anyone.
