TV networks and stations used to present news as a public service. They didn't make money on it, it was just for prestige.

Today, though, news is a money-maker. This is partly due to the consolidation of so many news outlets into just a few large corporations, which are more interested in profits than real news. So they do less actual reporting (which is expensive) and more of just repeating what govt. officials tell them. And they talk more about it (which is cheap).

I also blame the American people somewhat. We don't -want- to hear news. We want entertainment!

Americans especially don't want to hear international news. At the time of 9/11 there was only one American news outlet who even had an office in the Middle East, and that was National Public Radio, one of the smallest and poorest of our national news outlets.

Luckily, we can still get international news on the Internet. Nearly every country has an English-language news outlet that publishes on the Internet, so we can find out what is happening in the world. But you have to care enough to look for it.

Not all American news is like that. There are places to go watch REAL news, there just happens to be a lot of entertainment shows/newspapers that people believe are news. Trust me, AFN news is DEFINATELY not entertainment, it's news.

to distract and brainwash. Keeping your eye off the prize and filling you full of lies is what the government has been all about ever since they infiltrated the media in the late 1940s.
