Yeah they believe that's how it happened, it was a lesser rank though, not the captain (the captain didn't do it in the movie either). I think it was the watchman that was slacking too. Although the romantic characters and such in the movie are fictitious, they kept everything else as close to the truth as possible.

The Titanic was supposed to be the fastest liner of its size ever built. The captain wanted to set a new record for crossing the Atlantic, to get publicity for himself and the ship and the company, so he had the ship going full speed, even though he knew the danger of icebergs.
Also the ship was supposed to be unsinkable. It was divided into compartments by bulkheads, and the idea was that any one or two compartments could flood but the ship would stay afloat. But the iceberg went down one side of the ship and sliced it open, opening many of the compartments.
There is also some suspicion that the steel used for the skin of the ship was substandard, not what the designer ordered.
The funny thing is, they saw the iceberg and tried to turn to avoid it, so it sliced down the side of the ship. If they'd just run straight into it, it would have flattened the bow of the ship, but it probably wouldn't have sank because most of the compartments would have remained intact.

The real thing that happened was the captain believed the ship was unsinkable and so from his careless steering they hit the Iceberg and believed that nothing was harmed with the boat. Believing that the boat was unsinkable. So when people had seen the water coming from the bottom of the ship they paniced and started to evacuate. It took them about 2hrs. before to evacuate before the ship sunk completely. The whole romance thing never happened either. There was no Rose. There was a Jack though, he died from being drunk and feel asleep while the evacuation and drowned. More on the Titanic read the book "A Night To Remember"
