Virtual Memory is the way your OS handles the RAM usage. You see your OS allocates a certain amount of your hard drive for usage as temporary storage for files on RAM that can't fit on ram and aren't being used. When they are needed they are loaded from hard drive and put on RAM but this is a slow process. RAM by the way is basically what all of your open files are stored on while they are in use. When it is too low it means you need to either buy more ram and install it in your computer or you can use the control pannel to say a larger amount of Hard disk space may be used for Virtual memory.

It harms nothing but the speed of your computer.

The red x that replaces a picture means the computer had a problem loading a specific picture. That is all.

Lots of questions here's your answers. It means your virtual memory (VM) is too low. In Windows Xp click Start>Control Panel>Sytem>Advanced>Performance>Advanced
There you will find your virtual memory. Set it manually to twice the amount of RAM you have installed in your computer and you will never need worry about the "VM too low" message. It doesn't do any harm. It doesn't normally make the red x appear. Two things make that red x appear. You don't have a plug-in installed or the link for the picture is dead.
Try using Firefox for a while and see if you still get the red X. As for needing more RAM. You can get by with 256MB but you really need 512MB or greater to really run XP well.

It doesn't make that red X appear. It's usually a problem with the site that makes that happen. Virtual memory is like RAM, but inside the hard drive. I would not recommend increasing the virtual memory. Try buying more RAM.

First, a short definition.
Virtual memory is an amount of space on your hard drive, that is used by the OS as RAM ... if you have enough RAM, you should be ok, but note that lots of programmes need virtual memory ..try closing some of them,or increase the ammount of space allocated to it.
You do this by opening MyComputer, right clicking anywhere in the page, selecting Properties.
Then Advanced>Performance>Virtual Memory ... the default value is 768 megs, but you can set it up to 10 GB i suggest 1 GB, it's enough.

First off, the red X is more likely because the server that hosts the pictures that you are trying to view is too busy to load the images.

Virtual memory is used to temporarily store information that is used when running your computer. It's diffrent than the hard drive, it is not used to permanently store data like your HD, so when you shut off your computer, your memory empties, wheres your hard drive retains the data stored on it.

Basically memory helps your machine process information, including caching video and audio, sotring temporary information for programs running, etc.

You need to get more memory, or try and use only one program at once.

Is there any particular time when your machine says that you are out of memory? Post more info and I will try and check back.

virtual memory is like RAM, basically speed memory instead of storage memory, the only difference is that it uses a certain amount of your harddrive as ram....but increasing it wont really make a difference other than decreasing your harddisk space....i recommend buying more ram

Google for: Virtual memory low

Clean up your hard drive and ensure you have 512MB RAM on XP.

Red X: stop using Internet Explorer and switch to Firefox.
