Most people are unaware that the word “dinosaur” was not coined until the 1840s by Sir. Richard Owen. So, if these creatures lived alongside humans prior to that time, they were not called dinosaurs. So what were they called? Dragons. Most cultures throughout the world possess ancient stories about dragons and sea monsters that closely resemble what we today would call dinosaurs. For instance, the flag of Wales depicts a dragon, which by the way, is claimed by some to be the oldest national flag still in use. Dragon stories have been handed down for generations in most civilizations.

No doubt many of these stories have been exaggerated through the years, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have their original basis in fact. I believe many of the dragon legends are simply distorted versions of dinosaur encounters.

As Paul Taylor has said, “Most of the dragon legends are full of exaggeration, magic and marvelous deeds. But this is not true of all of them. Many stories seem rather believable.”

It is true that many of them are mythical or legendary but it is also true that most legends are based on some truth. It cannot be an accident that so many separate peoples of the world tell such stories.

The story of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and Saint George killing dragons are likely to have been based on at least some fact. These were real men in history.

As you probably know, dragons are prominent on Chinese pottery, embroidery, carvings, etc. It’s interesting that the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac are all animals—eleven of which are still alive today, but one is the dragon. It doesn’t seem logical that the ancient Chinese, when constructing their zodiac, would include one mythical animal with eleven real animals.

In 1271, Marco Polo (the Italian explorer) reported that on special occasions in China the royal chariot was pulled by dragons. Marco Polo also said that the saw long reptiles in Asia called Lindworms that could easily ran as fast as a horse.

In 1611, we can see that the emperor of China appointed the post of “Royal Dragon Feeder” which doesn’t make sense if there were no dragons to feed. We also find Ancient Chinese books telling of people using dragon eggs, blood, bones and other parts for medicine.

John of Damascus (an Arab monk in the 8th century) wrote against some of the wild and mythical claims about dragons and said, “I am not telling you, after all, that there are no dragons; dragons exist but they are serpents [reptiles] borne of other serpents. When just born and young, they are small; but when they grow up and mature, they become big and fat so that they exceed the other serpents in length and size. It is said they grow up more than thirty cubits [45 feet]; as for their thickness, they become as thick as a huge log.”

There is a well-known science book from the 16th century by a Swiss naturalist and medical doctor named Conrad Gesner called Historia Animalium. The book claims that dragons were still not extinct in the 1500's, but were extremely rare and relatively small by then.

The American Indian “Thunderbird” stories sound like pterosaurs and even some evolutionists have conceded on that point. Darlene Geis said, “The thunderbird appears in many Indian tales and Indian art work. Its description is very much like one of the prehistoric flying reptiles that flapped its way through the skies in the days of the dinosaurs.”

After Alexander the Great invaded India (356-323 B.C.) he brought back reports of great hissing reptiles the Indians kept in caves. There was one that really frightened his army was estimated by them to be over 100 feet long.

And then there’s all the stories of giant sea serpents and sea monsters. As Dr. Mace Baker said, “For more than a thousand years ancient and medieval mariners often returned from their voyages with frightening tales of encounters with, or sightings of, large and dangerous sea monsters.”

There are hundreds of these types of legends. Evolutionists just say that it’s coincidence that many of them sound like dinosaurs. World Book Encyclopedia says: “The dragons of legend are strangely like actual creatures that have lived in the past. They are much like the great reptiles [dinosaurs] which inhabited the earth long before man was supposed to have appeared on earth.”

dragons are real, but rare and the spitting fire thing might be an invention but there is a possibility that a creature on earth could be breathing fire. After all, whales are 'breathing water'... and also consider that more is known abou the moon and its geology etc than what lives on earth!

Nowadays dragons are most often encountered in Asian legends and myths (even present-day ones). Asia is also the last place where there are vast areas of yet undisturbed nature and where dragons might still hide out. In Europe they are long extinct - now wait with the current destruction of the environment, and sooner or later we are bound to stumble upon a dragon!

Yes and I would say yes.

I have seen three dragons that I am sure of. 2 I will not talk about because they don't illustrate the fire blowing thing.

Myself and 2 friends went off one night into the woods. This is a place we have all been before. the moon was up and, while not full, was pretty bright. There were no illeagle or legal chemicals in our systems.

We walked into this wooded area. We were on one side of a ravine. A small stream runs throught the bottom of the ravine, and the other side is easy to see. I stop saying something to the affect of "Oh my god am I seeing what I think I'm seeing? do you guys see that?" The girl on my left says she can't see it. The guy on my right who has to be right up on all that stuff was like "Yeah I see it. Oh my god I can't believe it" So we're discussing it and I'm pointing and trying to show them what I see. Then we all see the head move and flame shoot from it's mouth. I was awed and very excited. I believe that dragons usually dwell in a more spiritual form, but... The girl to my left was speachless and excited. She had been starting to see what I was pointing out. The guy on my right I swear pissed himself and said nothing for most of the rest of the night. After that the Dragon just disapeared.
Tell me there is not such things as dragons and I will have a hard time believeing you.
Tell me there is no such thing as magic and I will probably laugh knowingly and walk away.
So to answer your question in a shorter form. Yes Dragons exist, though usually in a spirit form, and yes at least some of them can breath fire.

I would normally say that they are myths and legends. Yet, it is a legend that has made it into several cultures around the world, so that is weird.

THEN I saw "Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real" by Animal Planet. They get scientists and animators together and they explain how it could have worked. Seems possible. I too believe there were dinosaurs, and this was basically one. And watching from there that fire breathing might not be such a stretch, I have to wonder...

From there, if you think that the invincible fire breathing dragon of legend might be toned down to able to breath some fire but not invincible is even more believable.

There are many kinds of dragons all over the world in mythology and religion.

Some are real. Komodo dragons are real, and were thought to be such creatures. Ball lightning strongly resembles the concept of dragons in some South-Eastern Asian countries. Dinosaur bones have been found for thousands of years. What would a person think, seeing such bones?

No dragon has come to light in a way that would leave scientists saying, "This is a dragon."

That aside, I have my own reasons for knowing that there are dragons. Best to stay with proof, however.

I just saw a documentary on dragons and according to the experts dragons are not and never were real. They were made up by man. Of course, nothing can spew fire out of its mouth, however, since man made up the dragon why not have it spew fire and have large claws? Experts feel that primitive man saw the bones of prehistoric animals who possessed claws and long tails and since these people didn't know any better they formed the bones into a dragon. There isn't a person on this planet who actually saw a dragon...except those who were mentally ill.

Dragons are dinosaurs. Someone mentioned asians, but that is a mistake. Dragons can be found in just about every culture, and the Sumerians (about the first civilization) had carvings of dragons in their buildings. So, to me dragons were the dinosaurs. It makes sense. Alexander the Great tells that his men were scared off by dragons, in India. So to me still a dinosaur, since dinosaurs have been said to be seen (20,000 reports this decade). So, my opinion is that dragons are dinosaurs.

there is a reptilian species called the komododragon. theyre salamanderlike lizards that grow to be 3 meters tall. other than that, there is no proof of dragons ever having existed.

there is a striking resemblence between asian dragons, european dragons. and flying lizards are described in many cultures. so its hard to discount them. they may have been a dinosaur species. they may also have just been a fable that started somewhere and spread through trade.

breathing fire is very unlikely, but you know how people exaggerate.

I dont think that they are currently alive. They have proved scientifically that they could exist. There was a special on animal planet about em. They ate like platinum to fule fire and they had a special type of bone so they could fly and wahtnot not hollow but special. It didn''t say they did exist it jsut said that scientifically they could. They also brought up the fact that cultures who had no contact came up with the same story about them.

The only real dragons are called "Komodo dragons," which originate on the island of Komodo (their namesake).

Here are some sites you can try, though I doubt this is anything like you would be interested in discovering -
