Recently when I start my car up-(1990 BMW 325i) –put it in drive, and accelerate, it makes a loud screeching noise. When I let down on the gas and turn the ac/heat off, it stops…Does anyone know what this might be? Does it need to be fixed right away or is it not such a serious problem? Thanks!

Looks like you have some loose belts.

Check the V-belt and a/c belt. But it's most likely the a/c belt.

When you turn the a/c on, your compressor's magnetic clutch engages, adding load to the pulley wheel that is turned by the a/c belt.

If the a/c belt is loose, it would slide a little on the pulley wheel, this causes it to screech.

It is not critical, but a slipping a/c belt means your a/c compressor is not spinning as fast as it should, and could possibly mean diminished cooling power. But the noise is really annoying though.

A replacement belt is cheap ($15 if even)? It can be installed easily by loosening one of the tensioners. Takes 5 minutes to install.

I recommend using "GatorBack" belts. You can find them at AutoZone and many other parts stores.

My girlfriends' car had the same problem as you. In her case, they tried filling up and recharging the freons on the car and it's still not working. Now that she hand it over to her Lil bro, her bro actually noticed that the fuse for the ac had blown. Now everything works again after replacing the blown fuse. If I were you, check the fuse for the AC first and if it's ok, try checking the freon and recharge if needed. (recharging and refill will cost you some money)

It could be V belts, air con compressor or pulley bearings.
tighten the belts and check pulley bearings too.
Loose belts may slip and damage the fan and etc.
check your milage done so far and get your timing belt checked by a qualified mechanic.
take care

Does it happen without the blower fan running (your ac/heat)? Could possibly be the blower fan bearings are going out. Also check your belts.
