I'm new to mail delivery. I sent out a regular envelope containing 2 pieces of regular plain paper in a mail box near a post office. I was wondering how long it will take to be delivered from California to Virginia. Also, I just put 2- 37 cent stamps on the envelope. Will that cover the cost of delivery? Also, I did not use priority mail or anything I just put my envelope with 2 stamps in the mail bin.

Thanks
-Taylor

Hi Taylor. I use to work at the Postal Service and believe it or not the service is a lot faster then what people believe. The big secret to service is not where the location is but how you address the letter. Automation you know. The nine digit zip-code is the trick. It will not only get to the city but the block and the delivery order. The longest anywhere in the connected U S States should be is 3 days on a first class letter. From California to Virginia would be three days. If you want to shorten this up use zip-plus four. (Nine digit) zip code and it should be there in two. You will by pass a couple of machines and pick up a day and zip by faster for delivery. Also above all remember to write neatly and always always use a return address on it just in case we have to get this letter back to you. Coming from a retired claims clerk this was my big thing. You would be surprised how very important this one is. My mother was sending a Christmas card to a niece that was out of that house for 10 years. Can you imagine how much sooner she would have known if she had used her return address. Zip plus four for two days service just about anywhere. For added information you can check www.usps.com or you can call 1-800-ASK-USPS OR 1-800-275-8777 for any of your postal questions.

As little as next day or as much as 2 days the mail is really good and it cost 41 cents so two stamps is plenty.
Everything goes airmail now on a space available basis so they will take it from your mail bin to the airport put it on a plane over night and deliver the next day if you mailed early in the day and if there was enough capacity on the plane if not it will go later so they will get it in 2 days. If you send it priority it will for sure get on the earlier flight. If you really care what time and date it will arrive you need to send it FedEx or some other more guarenteed method it will cost about $25 to get it there by morning. We use that when bidding a job when it has to be there or lose the chance to earn a lot of money. It really matters if it gets there at 10AM or 2PM so is worth paying extra.

What is so particular with working over the weekend for postal workers ! All other services operate 24/7 and I am sure the workers in those industries all live normal lives! If they did not work we would have no 'power' services to start with - which would just about close down everything, not least of all computer for business and fun. Just carry on postal workers and enjoy your other days off!

A standard first class letter takes about 3 days for delivery once it has been picked up. Depending on the pick up time of where you drop off your letter, it could go out the same day, or the next day. If you happened to drop off your letter after the pickup time on Saturday, it won't go out until the following Monday.

Standard first class postage is $0.41 for a 2 ounce letter.
