reduce the weight of the craft in order order to obtain maximum thrust efficiency from the remaining engines.

A. Reduce the Mass of the craft.

This is the case in large multi stage rockets, the rocket uses a powerful but heavy large main engine to achive maximum thrust. However once the fule is used up the engine must then be jettisoned to 1. expose the other engine parts that while being lower in power do not need the power of the main engine, they just maintain and increase speed and 2. reduce the total mass of the space craft to allow the lower powered secondary engines the maximum efficeintcy.

Hope this helps.

a. reduce the weight of the craft is the right answer.

Multistage rockets jettison each stage after the fuel burns out so that the rocket becomes lighter and the smaller subequent stage motors can still develop adequae thrust to accelerate the craft further. Control of a smaller body needs lesser energy.

Some rockets jettison their engines to ...

a. reduce the weight of the craft

As the mass of the craft becomes lighter, thrust remains constant so the acceleration of the rocket will increase.
