I have outdoor pond where there are some 3 inches Oranda Goldfish and also i have more than 50 Oranda's fry in my ten gallon tank. I am just feeding hard boiled Egg Yolk and they are not growing fast, its been 2 months, now they are grew upto 0.5 (half Inch) only. I hear that Discus Fish breeders feed Beef Heart to Discus and their fry to make them big soon. Even i am thinking to feed Beef Heart to my Orandas and their fry to make them big soon. Is this safe for Goldfish? Does any one had try it? If you had then what was the result? Also how to feed Beef Heart, should we have to boil it before feeding?

It's safe for goldfish and will provide some nutritional value, but to be honest it's not really the best source of protein for fish. Your fish will be better off if you avoid meats from warmblooded animals such as beef, chicken, pork etc and feed from coldblooded sources such as insects and other fish. Things such as shrimp, clams, etc also fall in that second group.

It's a fine line and a small detail, but the amino acid balance is far better in the coldblooded sources of protein for your fish.

Many Discus breeders have and continue to use it as part of their fish's diet and it works, but only as part of a very well balanced diet and only when superior products are not available.

To feed beef heart you will need to get the hearts and remove all of the tough membranes, valves and other tissues like arteries. Then chop it very fine or place it in a food processor and basically turn it into course hamburger meat. you can then feed small bite sized pieces of this tot he fish. I can be frozen in a fairly thin layer to preserve it and help you with portion control.

Breeders use beefheart to make them grow big and fast.

For normal fishkeepers it's much healthier for the fish to let them grow at a natural pace with natural foods. Forcing fast growth through overly high protien foods can lead to shortened lifespans and short, fat shaped fish when they do get big. Instead of rushing it, you should feed them normal foods meant for fish without overfeeding them and excercise patience.

If you do choose to use beefheart, do so sparingly, make sure you trim off every bit of fat, and be careful feeding because it can pollute the water very easily - it is messy.
