when I visit gametrailers.com and check out the videos there are standard def version and high def version of the same videos when I look at the file size of the high def version and compare it to the file size of the standard def version, the high def version file size is way larger. why is this so?

because it is HIGH definition. MORE info = larger file size. If you are not viewing in HD, you dont need the hidef file.

high definition will always be higher in file size because with a high definition graphics card or tv the detail and quality of both picture and sound will be much higher than standard definition videos. this means more information needs to be encoded into the video file thus increasing its size

Because its a larger resolution.

A larger resolution has more pixels so a bigger file size is needed to store more pixels

till they have been easily filmed in extreme def, you will no longer be able to truly upscale. and you could't do jack with something from YouTube... they get compressed to lots whilst they are uploaded. too lots archives lost.
