Most people are under insured. Its going to be up to a year before some people are back in their homes. How can they allow people to sleep in their cars. Pay to put them up in Hotels.

I am in the republic of Ireland and I was born in England so of course I was following it up in the news. We didn't get any flooding here but I do feel sorry for everyone in England who suffered a great ordeal. It drives me mad to hear the government won't acknowledge the problem and help out, afterall they are not short of a few pounds themselves. It is hard to believe that was British weather, more like tropical weather.

To find the answer to this, you must first look to America and the way the United States Government is and has handled natural disasters. Hurricane devestate the Gulf Coast? Get your good buddy to do it, whose qualifications include the ability to judge a horses buttocks and mane. No kidding here. People all along the Gulf Coast are still suffering as a result of the disaster of FEMA and the greed and corruption of government officials, local and federal (assigning multi-billion dollar contracts to out-of-state contractors with political ties when local ones can clearly do the job and need the money to boot). I would like to know why the insurance company was de-regulated and is exempt from many laws all other businesses are forced to abide by? I wonder how the Smith family down the road from here is going to live once FEMA takes away their trailer, after they lost their home down to the slab and the insurance company claims it was caused by Wind damage? Are they supposed to take showers in the rain and sleep in their car now? What about the woman who lived in Wyoming and filed a claim with FEMA under a false address...and was awarded thousands of dollars yet my aunt had to wait a year and a half before she got any aid even though she's 80 years old and lost her house completely, including every momento of her life?

If you can answer any of these... you will know why the US of A's government is not helping anyone except themselves.

Because they need money for other "more important matters", i.e. Olympics, i.d. cards, paying the police to protect us from terrorists who they know are already here etc. Can householders sue the developers at all, if they have built on flood plains and not provided adequate drainage. Also, perhaps the time is right for people not to buy properties built on flood plains or places where flooding is likely to occur. Check with the environment agency before buying properties in these areas. If they can't sell them, they won't build any more.

because it is not their job, these people have insurance. you find the same people shouting for help, have no insurance but smoke and have sky TV, probably claim some form of benefit and have limited interested in working.

why should the government pick up the pieces for something that was not their fault. They have rescued them, looked after them for a week, pumped the water out, now people need to take responsibility from themselves.

the problem is society, where people do not accept responsibility for anything, it is always someone elses job.

Insurance will replace belonging, repair house and pay for accommodation whilst it's being done.

EXTRA - I live in Yorkshire, so this is proper not speculated knowledge.

If people are under insured whose fault is that ?

If they are insured , it will pay for housing , sleeping in car that is just rubbish, everyone has relatives , friends , hostels etc.. some people want to do that so that they can moan about it after.

Simple answer - because we're some time away (2 years) from a general Election and people's memories are not that good when it comes to remembering the successes/failures of central Government. At least that is what this Government is banking on.

The governments do more than you think! the problem is that they don't do anything for you but they do everything against you!
So this is why people should not be afraid of their governments! Governments have to be afraid of the people!

Don't just sit there and wait for the Government to do everything for you. They won't. You, as a US citizen have to push the Government to do things. You have to make sure your tax dollars are well spend. So if you think something has to be done, do something about it. Write to the media. Write to the Congress. Write to the President. Get a group of people to do the demonstration. Try anything you could to catch the public attention and get their support.

It's up to the local councils to install effective flood defences, as the houses are built on flood plains it would have been a sensible idea but as usual profit outweighs common sense.

Its interesting to see that the Scots are totally unsympathetic (quelle surprise). What if this happened north of the border? Massive aid would be forthcoming? - You Bet it Would.
